Frequently asked questions
What Thumbwise does, what you need, what it costs and how it handles your data. Still have a question? Email [email protected].
Can I rearrange my iPhone apps from my Mac?
Yes. Thumbwise is a Mac app that reads your iPhone Home Screen over a USB cable. You arrange your apps, folders and widgets in a larger workspace on your Mac, preview the result, then apply the layout directly to your iPhone. The step-by-step guide walks through it.
Why is Thumbwise a Mac app instead of an iPhone app?
Apple doesn’t let iPhone apps rearrange your Home Screen. So Thumbwise runs on your Mac and applies the layout to your iPhone over a USB cable.
Do I need to jailbreak my iPhone?
No. Thumbwise does not jailbreak your iPhone or bypass its security. It uses Apple’s device connection: connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable and pair it through Apple’s “Trust This Computer” prompt.
What do I need to use Thumbwise?
A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, an iPhone on iOS 27, and a USB cable to connect them.
How much does Thumbwise cost, and what is free?
Downloading Thumbwise, organizing and previewing your layout are free. Thumbwise costs $14.99 USD once to unlock Apply, which applies layouts to your iPhone. There is no subscription.
One personal license covers up to three Macs that you personally own. Your license key comes with your receipt; enter it in Thumbwise to unlock Apply.
Is my Home Screen data uploaded anywhere?
Your Home Screen layout and app activity stay on your Mac. Thumbwise has no account system and does not upload them to a Thumbwise server.
The app does contact a few services: Lemon Squeezy to activate and check your license, thumbwise.app to check for updates, and PostHog for anonymous product usage analytics, which you can turn off in Settings. The Privacy notice lists exactly what is sent.
How is Thumbwise different from Apple Configurator?
Apple Configurator is Apple’s free Mac app for setting up and managing devices, and it can also change the app layout on a connected iPhone. Thumbwise is made only for arranging your own Home Screen. See how Thumbwise compares with Apple Configurator.
What if I don’t like the result or something goes wrong?
Thumbwise changes your iPhone Home Screen only when you choose Apply after reviewing a preview. Before it applies a layout, it keeps a local backup of your previous layout. It also keeps your 5 most recent Reads, and Restore lets you load one of them and apply it again.
You are still responsible for keeping your own iPhone backups, for example in iCloud or on your Mac.
How do usage-based layout suggestions work?
Optimization is optional. Thumbwise uses your available app usage data to estimate swipes between Home Screen pages over the past 30 days, then can arrange a layout designed to reduce those swipes.
That usage data is Screen Time activity synced to your Mac. To make it available, turn on Share Across Devices in Screen Time on both your iPhone and your Mac, signed in to the same Apple Account. You can always arrange everything yourself instead.
Can an AI assistant organize my apps?
Yes, if you want. Connect a compatible AI assistant through Thumbwise’s MCP tools. With your authorization, it can use your layout and available usage data to customize the arrangement, for example by grouping apps by color. You review the result, then choose Apply.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. You can get a full refund of the amount you paid within 14 days of purchase. Email support or choose Refund request in Thumbwise’s Help & Support, with your purchase email and, if you have it, your order number.
A refund revokes your license. Restoring an earlier layout uses Apply, so Restore before you request a refund if you want your iPhone back the way it was. See the Terms for details.
Is Thumbwise made by Apple?
No. Thumbwise is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple Inc.
